Our Story — UGS Consulting journey

What We Do

We solve organizational performance problems — on both sides.

UGS Consulting helps organizations improve how work gets done and how people perform. We specialize in two connected areas: Operational Performance & Transformation — improving the operating systems, processes, workflows, accountability, and technology that determine whether work gets done well — and Workforce & Leadership Effectiveness — developing the leaders, skills, talent systems, and organizational capability that determine whether people perform well.

Most organizations don't have only an operations problem or only a people problem. They have both. Better processes don't hold when the workforce isn't ready to sustain them. Stronger leaders can't succeed inside broken systems. UGS connects both sides of the equation — improving the work and the people responsible for doing it.

Across both specialties, UGS applies AI, automation, data, and modern technology as responsible enablers — improving speed, accuracy, and insight while keeping human judgment, accountability, and oversight at every decision point.

Why I Founded UGS Consulting

A Message from Our Founder

Caroline Bernice Liddell — Founder & CEO

A legacy should do more than provide for one family. It should create opportunities for many.

It Started During COVID

The idea for UGS Consulting began taking shape during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I watched businesses struggle. Some organizations that had existed for years suddenly found themselves trying to survive circumstances they had never anticipated. Businesses were closing. Employees were losing jobs. Families were losing income. Leaders were being forced to make difficult decisions while trying to figure out how to operate in an environment that had changed almost overnight.

What stood out to me was that COVID didn't only create new business problems. In many cases, it exposed problems that were already there. Organizations discovered gaps in their processes, technology, workforce planning, leadership, operations, succession planning, and ability to adapt.

I kept thinking: there has to be a way to help businesses become stronger before they reach the point of crisis.

Because when a business fails, the impact doesn't stop with the business owner.

  • Employees lose jobs.
  • Families lose income.
  • Communities lose employers.
  • Customers lose services.
  • And years — sometimes generations — of work can disappear.

That became one of my earliest reasons for creating UGS Consulting. I wanted to help build stronger organizations that could create sustainable opportunities for people.

But 2020 was also one of the most difficult years of my life. That same year, my mother became terminally ill and passed away. Losing her took a tremendous emotional toll on me and delayed my plans to fully launch the company. For a time, I questioned whether I had the strength or motivation to move forward at all.

When we fail to do what we are called to do, there may be people whose lives are affected because we never stepped into our purpose.

— an idea attributed to Will Smith that stayed with our founder

Over time, I found the strength, faith, and motivation to move forward. By 2023, I began seriously working to bring UGS to life. I realized that this company was about more than building a business. It was about using my experience, gifts, and purpose to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people, organizations, businesses, and communities.

The journey that followed was not perfect. Like many early-stage businesses, we made mistakes, learned difficult lessons, tested different approaches, and discovered what worked — and what did not. Rather than allowing those experiences to stop us, we used them to become wiser, stronger, and more intentional about the company we wanted to build.

Then the Vision Became Bigger

Legacy.

As I continued developing UGS, I realized there was another reason I was building it.

Like many parents, I think about my children, their children, and the generations that will come after them. I wanted to create something they could inherit, continue building, and use to create economic opportunity for future generations. But I didn't want that legacy to benefit only my family. I wanted to create an organization capable of creating opportunities for many families — where employees could build careers, provide for their families, develop professionally, and create legacies of their own.

That changed my definition of success. Success couldn't simply mean building a profitable company. It had to mean building a company that creates value for people.

"Success couldn't simply mean building a profitable company. It had to mean building a company that creates value for people."

— Caroline Bernice Liddell

The principle that connects everything:

Leave people, organizations, and communities better than I found them.

You cannot sustainably improve an organization without investing in its people, and you cannot fully develop people without creating organizations where they have the opportunity to succeed. That's why UGS improves the work and the workforce.

Building the Kind of Company I Wanted to See

Value your people, and they will value your organization.

I also wanted UGS to reflect the principles we encourage other organizations to embrace. People should feel valued. People should be respected. People should have opportunities to develop. People should be appropriately rewarded for the value they help create.

Behind every employee is a person trying to build a life, support a family, accomplish goals, and create opportunities for the next generation. That's why I want UGS to become a company where talented people can do meaningful work, contribute ideas, continue developing, and participate in the success they help create.

When people grow, organizations grow.

And when organizations grow responsibly, they can create opportunities throughout entire communities.

Growth Is the Common Thread

Everything I have pursued has one common thread.

Talent development, coaching, consulting, mentoring, writing, entrepreneurship, and community development. When I look across all of it, one word connects everything: Growth.

That philosophy extended beyond UGS and contributed to the vision for the Crescite Foundation — whose name means growth, and whose mission is to help young people ages 16–24 gain access to mentorship, education, career preparation, and economic mobility.

The larger vision:

1

How do we build stronger organizations?

2

How do stronger organizations create better opportunities for people?

3

How do those opportunities strengthen families?

4

How can stronger families ultimately contribute to stronger communities?

That's the larger vision behind UGS Consulting.

The Vision Begins

UGS was formally established on July 20, 2020 — born from watching the pandemic expose how vulnerable organizations could be when they lacked the right strategy, systems, workforce structure, and ability to adapt.

Research, Restructuring & Finding Our Direction

We took this time to conduct extensive research, restructure, and determine what kind of company UGS wanted to be. Inspired by Warren Buffett's "circle of competence," we focused on what we know best — and discovered the power of government contracting, positioning UGS for future opportunities.

A New Chapter

UGS enters a new chapter with stronger leadership, refined services, improved systems, and a scalable vision for the future. This is the year our vision became our reality.

A Defining Year

2026 — The Next Chapter

In 2026, we made the decision to restructure the company, strengthen our leadership, refine our services, build the right operational infrastructure, and reposition UGS for long-term growth. This became a defining year — the year the original vision began transforming into the organization we had always intended to build.

Today, UGS Consulting is no longer simply an idea born during a crisis. It is an evolving consulting firm with two clear specialties: Operational Performance & Transformation — improving how work gets done — and Workforce & Leadership Effectiveness — strengthening the people responsible for doing it. Built through purpose, resilience, and continuous learning, UGS is committed to helping organizations solve complex performance challenges and achieve better, lasting results.

Our journey has not been perfect, but every challenge taught us something, every mistake helped us build smarter, and every setback helped clarify our purpose.

In 2026, UGS entered its next chapter — with a stronger foundation, a clearer direction, and a scalable vision for the future.

Better Organizations. Better Results.

What We Stand For

Our Core Values

These eight values define how UGS operates, how we treat people, and what we hold ourselves accountable to — in every engagement, every hire, and every decision.

Growth
·
Excellence
·
Integrity
·
People First
·
Innovation
·
Impact
·
Partnership
·
Strategic Courage

Growth

Never stop growing.

We believe people and organizations should continuously develop. We strengthen capability, develop talent, and help organizations become better than they were before.

Excellence

High standards. Every engagement.

We hold ourselves to high standards. We deliver quality work, meet commitments, and continuously improve how we serve our clients.

Integrity

Do what is right.

We operate with honesty, transparency, and accountability — even when no one is watching. Ethical decision-making is non-negotiable.

People First

Transformation succeeds when people succeed.

We value employees, clients, partners, and communities. Every solution we design puts the human experience at the center.

Innovation

Challenge how it's always been done.

We use technology, AI, data, research, and new ways of thinking to create smarter solutions — and we question the status quo before accepting it.

Impact

Activity is not enough.

Our work must produce measurable improvements in performance, workforce effectiveness, operations, and organizational outcomes. Results, not reports.

Partnership

With clients, not just for them.

We listen, collaborate, share accountability, and build solutions clients can sustain after our engagement ends. We don't deliver and disappear.

Strategic Courage

Ask the hard questions.

We are willing to identify what is not working, challenge assumptions, and recommend meaningful change — even when it's uncomfortable.

The philosophy connecting all eight:

Leave people and organizations better than we found them.

Our Vision

A Legacy in Motion.

UGS Consulting is building more than a consulting firm. We are building stronger organizations, stronger leaders, stronger systems, and stronger communities.

We don't measure our success only by revenue or the number of clients we serve. We measure it by what becomes better because we were there.

How many organizations became stronger?

How many leaders became better?

How many employees developed new capabilities?

How many jobs were created or protected?

How many people were given an opportunity to grow?

We want to help organizations:

Building Something Bigger Than Me

UGS was never intended to depend entirely on its founder.

UGS was never intended to depend entirely on its founder. My vision is to build an enduring organization supported by talented people, strong leadership, effective systems, innovative technology, and a culture capable of carrying its mission forward.

Someday, my children may help lead what I started. Another generation may eventually take their place. But I want them to inherit more than a company. I want them to inherit a responsibility — a responsibility to create opportunities for others, to treat people well, to help organizations become stronger, and to leave communities better than they found them.

COVID may have helped me recognize the need.

Legacy gave me another reason to build it.

Growth became the mission.

And impact is what I want it to leave behind.

This is bigger than building a consulting company. It's about building stronger organizations, developing stronger people, creating opportunities for families, and establishing a legacy that can continue growing for generations.

"The measure of UGS will not simply be how large we become. It will be how many organizations we strengthen, how many leaders we develop, how many opportunities we create, and how much better we leave the people and communities we serve."

Our Purpose

To leave people, organizations, and communities better than we found them.

UGS Consulting exists to create meaningful, sustainable growth by strengthening both the work and the workforce.

We believe organizations are stronger when their people are stronger. We help organizations improve how work gets done, develop the capabilities of their people, strategically use technology and innovation, and build systems that allow them to grow, adapt, and thrive.

Our purpose extends beyond solving today's business challenges. We seek to help organizations build something that lasts — preserving what works, transforming what does not, developing people, creating opportunity, and strengthening the communities those organizations serve.

For UGS, success is not simply measured by what we accomplish during an engagement. It is measured by what remains afterward:

Stronger people.

Individuals who leave more capable than when we met.

Better work.

Operations that are more efficient, accountable, and scalable.

Healthier organizations.

Institutions built to adapt and endure.

Greater opportunity.

Pathways created for employees and communities.

Sustainable growth.

Results that compound over time, not just in the moment.

Lasting impact.

Contributions that outlast the engagement.

That is the purpose behind Upward Growth Solutions

Growth that moves people and organizations upward — and creates impact that lasts for generations.
